Sex change is a descriptively inaccurate term often used by society in place of the more accurate gender reassignment surgery for both transsexual and intersexual individuals.

[edit] A catch all term

The term sex change is also used by some as a catch all term for the whole process of gender role reversal and the medical procedures associated with it. Changing of gender roles by transsexuals is an important step in their transition.
