[edit] Hermaphrodites

Hermaphrodites is an old term used to discribe creatures characterised by the presence of both male and female sexual organs. The terms hermaphrodite and pseudohermaphrodite, which have been used in the past, are now considered pejorative and inaccurate and are no longer used to refer to an intersexual or intersexed person. Sometimes the phrase "ambiguous genitalia" is used. Recently the term "Disorders of Sexual Development," or DSD, has been promoted by some within the intersex advocacy community as a way of defining the medical focus of the condition. This new term has raised controversy within the intersex community at large because of its alleged pathologization of the phenomenon.

An 'intersexual or intersexed person is one who is born with genitalia and/or secondary sexual characteristics determined as neither exclusively male nor female, or which combine features of the male and female sexes.

This term is also often used to describe people with fully or partially developed male and female sexual characteristics. The modern term for such people is Intersexual.
