The current medical treatments available to transsexuals tend to result in either temporary or permanent sterility (permanent sterility occurring more frequently). Therefore reproductive options should be seriously considered prior to starting hormone replacement therapy or undergoing gender reassignment surgery.

[edit] MTF Options

MTF options for reproduction are similar to the options for males undergoing a vasectomy. Usually this is limited to semen storage at a cryobanks. It is theoretically possible to preserve a semen sample indefinitely. Cryobanks offer individuals the ability to store their semen for a nominal monthly rate (typically between $30 and $50) so to keep their reproductive options when faced with a medical procedure that may leave them sterile.

[edit] FTM Options

FTM Options for reproduction post-transition is to have eggs harvested prior to undergoing HRT or GRS. Typically, eggs are harvested by first inducing multiple follicle development by administering hormones (typically clomiphene citrate, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)) that cause multiple eggs to mature. The matured eggs (secondary oocytes) are them harvested/retrieved from the ovaries. The eggs are then stored (similar to semen in a cryobank) until the female decides to use them. Eggs are theoretically capable of being stored indefinitely. And, as in the case with the cryobank, a nominal monthly fee is charged for storage of the harvested eggs.

[edit] Surrogate wombs

A surrogate womb is a womb in which a fertilized egg is place to gestate, however there is no genetic relationship between the surrogate mother and the developing fetus. Surrogate wombs are a necessary component for any FTM desiring to have a child born of their own stored eggs after they have transitioned. There are several legal and ethical issues that should be considered prior to deciding on having a surrogate womb.

[edit] No reproduction

Some opt not take on the extra expense while others object to having a part of them that they hate being used to create life. A few strongly adhere to one or more of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement's reasons for not reproducing. With more and more women choosing to wait or not to bear children, loss of reproduction should not hinder transition.
