[edit] The Epilady

The Epilady was one of the first mass market electric epilation devices. The Epilady was launched in 1986 and was a huge hit around Christmas time. The original Epilady had a rotating metal coil that would physically rip the hair from the follicle. This resulted in a rather painful user experience. Since the times of the first Epilady, epilation devices have seen many changes. These devices are now both more effective and less painful than their predecessors.

[edit] Current Epilation Devices

Several epilation devices are currently sold. The Epilady Company (creators of the Epilady) currently have the Duet, Legend, and EpiGirl. While Philips Norelco offers the Satinelle Epilator. Panasonic, Braun, NOrelco, and Emjoi also have similar epilator devices available. The current epilation devices use several discs that act as tweezers. These 'tweezers' open and close several times per second. There is still some mild to moderate pain (especially the first time they are used). The pain experience has been reported to be less than the pain experienced with waxing.

[edit] Benefits

The main benefit of using an epilation devices is that the area treated tends to remain satiny smooth for up to 4 weeks. With the product improvements that are currently underway, epilation devices seem to be growing strength as a viable option for longer term hair removal.
