A Guide to Coming Out
From Susan's Place Transgender Wiki
One of the most difficult aspects of being Transgender is having to face our families and friends with the gender issues that we face. The most common issue we face and probably the most difficult is "coming out." Stories are plentiful about people who came out to families and friends expecting to be embraced or, at the very least, tolerated, and ended up being disowned.
Coming out is extremely crucial to a transgender person. Once the words come out of their mouth about their transgender identity, no amount of explaining can take those words back. It is for this very reason that many people go through extensive therapy and self-exploration before they ever come out to anyone, especially family and friends.
There are many stories in the Susan's forums detailing the many experiences, both good and bad, that transgender men and women have faced. It's a good idea to read personal narratives, coming out stories & letters to get a better idea of what might be expected. By anticipating potential reactions, you will be much better prepared to handle the monumental event and will make the process much easier than if you hadn't.
